Riesling – Estate Wine from the steep slopes of the Saar with a dry taste profile.
Grown on Devonian slate soils with Rhyolith and parts from volcanic quartz-porphyry rock origins.
A fragrant, dry Riesling is produced from highly ripe grapes grown on vines that are at least 30 years old. The finest slate layers help to create a beguiling aromatic cocktail of mirabelle, elderflower and white peach tones.
REVIEWS
91/100
The 2018 Saar Riesling offers an aromatic nose that is clear, concentrated and flinty scented with crunchy slate and herbal notes. Impressive! Full-bodied and lush on the first palate, this is a crystalline, refreshing, mineral and well-structured dry Riesling with round and elegant fruit, lingering salinity and a stony lemon flavor. Very good and intensely aomatic, with slate-drive length, this is focused and precise 2018 Saar Riesling at its best.

Small, fine with a special magic - the saar valley.
In terms of area, the rather small viticulture of the Saar is mostly limited south-facing slate slopes in tributary valleys. This creates a unique combination of barren yet, at the same time fertile, slate soils, rich in minerals, with the warmth of the steep slopes. These aspects are so important for the aroma formation of the Riesling. The result is extraordinarily elegant and finesse-rich wines made to be enjoyed.
“Elegant, fresh, light-footed masterpieces”
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
Our vision is to revive the Saar wines 1900s reputation and give new life to the region.
THE HISTORY OF THE SAAR
How the Saar made its reputation.
“The area is small and the winegrowing villages are few, but they have certainly learned to make a name for themselves. […] Saar wines are generally credited with displaying the most noble of Riesling bouquets, even more than do those of the Mosel Valley. They are also leaner, more ethereal, and indeed even lighter in color, but otherwise generally of genuine Mosel character.” H. Koch, Moselwein, 1897
“There is only one confession that I cannot deny, such a fine Saar vintage wine, with its sparkling freshness, belongs to the best… which the Lord has matured on this planet.” This original quote from a commemorative publication in 1927 expresses perfectly our enthusiasm for the fantastic quality and rare potential of the Saar.
In terms of size, the rather small viticulture of the Saar, is limited predominantly to south-facing slate slopes. This unique combination of barren, mineralrich, fertile, slate soils and the warmth of the steep slopes, is so important to the aroma formation of the Riesling. Arno Luik from Stern described this unusual situation on the steep slopes of Van Volxem as “a climatic border area where heaven and hell are close together.”
The result is glorious ripe fruit, moderate alcohol and a fascinating elegance and delicacy. At the end of the 19th century, Saar wines achieved top prices at the important Trier auctions, on average, prices were significantly higher than those of the Mosel. The great importance of the Saar at this time is evident in the fact that, although it only had a 10-percent share of the entire Mosel region, almost half of the “best Mosel wines” auctioned in Trier came from the renowned Saar estates.
The historical vineyard maps.
A great wine is always a reflection of its origin, coupled with the dedication and passion of the people who created it. The study of historical vineyard maps and documents helped us from the beginning to rediscover and then to recultivate some of the most valuable sites in the Saar region. Even back then, the best sites on the Saar were among the most coveted and expensive vineyards in the world.
The natural wine concept.
The focus of our intense work is a conscious return to artisanal traditions with a respect for the uniqueness of our steep slopes. The basis for the worldwide success of Mosel and Saar-wines during the imperial period was the Burgundian concept of “clos” and “terroir” and we are committed to this legacy.
Historical wine lists from around the world.
Saar wines enjoyed an excellent reputation around 1900. They were among the most desirable wines of outstanding international restaurants. Saar wines, including those from Van Volxem, were sometimes more expensive than wines from today’s most renowned wineries in the world.
Respect for the uniqueness of our steep slopes
“Full of excitement, profoundly immense minerals, salty, of dense texture, pure drinking pleasure!” Falstaff
Following the long tradition of Van Volxem, our wines are mostly dry – thought of as a harmonious meal companion, moderate in alcohol, ripe in acidity, dense and complex in structure. Our wines’ uniqueness is shaped by the barren, mineral-rich slate soils of our steep slopes, themselves relics of millions of years old sea deposits.
The Van Volxem style is characterized by the striving for balance and harmony in the glass. Animating wines from a unique location and with great aging potential – in the style of the famous Imperial Saar wines.
“Power, sophistication, elegance, depth without end – incredible” Sommelier Justin Leone.
They are wines that challenge in every respect: with back-breaking work in the steep slate gorges; the cellar master with the careful, loving handling of his barrels and ultimately the connoisseur appreciating the intricacies of the wine. Low stock yields, strict selection, a harvest possibly not before mid-October, spontaneous fermentation and maturity are all part of our Saar wine culture.
The result is a light alcohol content and therefore extremely digestible, mineral-rich wines, with an opulent Riesling fruit bouquet, with a clear place profile and great aging potential, in the style of the famous Saar wines from the Imperial era.
The perfect workplace for our vision.
“It was always clear to me – here on the Saar that – there is only one way to reach your goal: the highest quality standards; precision and perfection. Over the years we have obtained the best slate sites and now have the perfect workplace to achieve our vision, which motivates my staff and I a lot.” Roman Niewodniczanski
We are a manufactory in the classic sense, using traditional artisanal methods, without the need for chemicals because we are convinced that this is the only way to create the fascination of our wines. We believe in wines that last forever long-lasting wines to provide endless joy. And we believe in wines for pure enjoyment, made to be drunk with joy with friends.
“A group of buildings that shape and enrich the Saar landscape.”
“To be environmentally friendly and socially sustainable are top priorities. Roman has created an inspirational, innovative clash between old and new, between the original estate villa and the breathtaking new facility!”

The Architecture.
With our new facility located above the Saar, on Wiltinger Schlossberg, we not only express our values of excellence and precision in wine, but also in our architecture and design.
It was our goal to recreate, with great attention to detail, a production facility based on the methods of the historical Royal Prussian State Domains (which helped optimize the production processes on the steep slopes of the Saar), enabling cellarmaster Dominik Völk and his team to work exclusively with gravity. This gravity-flow winemaking process better preserves the fragrance and flavor of the finished wine.
The tower-like building, termed the “Monolith” is connected to the cask cellar. Meanwhile, an exclusive visitor courtyard patio has been created above, making the special landscape and our manufactory more enjoyable.
The use of natural stone played an important role in the entire implementation process. It is reminiscent of the mineralized slate slopes in our immediate surroundings. For this reason, light shell limestone has been used on the facades of the buildings. It requires no further treatment, therefore meeting the highest sustainability standards.
An attraction with great appeal, precision wine-manufacturing in beautiful surroundings.
The Exclusive Tasting Room.
In our exclusive tasting room, you are able to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of our Saar vineyards, whilst experiencing an excellent winetasting with our special team of advisors.
The tasting room, is located on the ground floor of the Monolith, the design of which is based on the “Bismarck Tower”, located on the opposite slope of the Saar River. The Bismarck Tower was built in 1893, as an expression of pride and self-confidence in the successful Saar viticulture at the turn of the century. In the tasting room, we wanted to create a place in which to convey to our guests the impressive history of the Saar and the craftsmanship of our manufactory.
The Panoramic Viewing Room.
On the upper floor of the Monolith is our panoramic viewing room. The room lives up to its name, offering spectacular views of five of our great sites through the 8.60 meter wide windows. One of these sites is Scharzhofberg, one of the most renowned sites for wine white in the world.
Discover the special ambience of our panorama viewing room: a guided tour of the ,manufactory, a wine tasting, or one of our special events. Among our regular guests are stars of the wine and culinary industry. Naturally our premises are also available for private events too.
The Cask Cellar.
The heart of our production is the cask cellar. The inspiration for the wall design of this unique room came from a typical Mosel vineyard, whose walls are made of natural stone.
In this extraordinary cellar, our Saar wines mature in large wooden casks in line with the 20th-century tradition of the famous Saar wines. The barrels were tailor-made for us by the legendary Austrian barrel-maker Franz Stockinger. The wood used for these barrels comes from the family’s own forests in the Eifel, planted by Roman Niewodniczanskis ancestors centuries ago.
The Rarity Cellar.
A special feature awaits you in the basement of the Monolith: our rarity cellar. True to the historical model, selected vintages and wines from top sites mature in honeycomb-like tanks, over many years to become real rarities.
In our rarity cellar, we present to you the exceptional maturity and high quality of our Riesling wines and here – like the “Monolith”, tie in the history of Saar wine that was internationally renowned around 1900.
