here are aromatic nuances that you don't expect; sensorial alchemies that cannot be explained unless we rediscover the expressiveness of nature, the origins of a territory.
We breathe and work in this territory.
It is in these fields that we produce our wines; expressive, territorial, true and unique wines, marked by evolution over time, and marked by a bold immediacy.
Grapes=Wine: this is the mathematical formula, the equality from which we start to describe our creations; lively, intense fruits, capable of taking us back, in any place and at any time, to the sunny days of September, in the rows, during the harvest; wines in which nature takes shape and substance, and where the impact of man becomes non-existent.
This must be wine: reality, truth... not the pure exercise of style of a winemaker, but the projection of a territory, of the people who work and inhabit it; we "walk" our vineyards, we love them and we love each other.
This is why we do not distort what they give us, but we do our utmost to preserve their authenticity, their natural expression: because the warmth, the colour, the richness of a wine are to be found first of all in the countryside and not in the cellar.
First there is the seed, then the fruit, then the hands that pick it; and above all, the passion and love for the land..
This is our "reasoned viticulture", this is our "emotional oenology"; the meeting between heart and mind, between passion and truth; between man and nature. Every story has its beginning... and this is our story.
Tenuta Lenzini extends for 24 hectares in the town of Gragnano in the splendid hills of Lucca, set in a natural amphitheater that frames it, determining its particular microclimate.
Consisting of 13 hectares of vineyards and 4 hectares of olive groves, the property has its origins in the 16th century. The property of the Arnolfini couple, the famous spouses portrayed by Van Eyck in the work exhibited at the British Museum in London, was from its origins the production hub for wine and oil in this part of the plain.
The Via Francigena also passed here; Napoleon's troops and the Bonapartes themselves walked in these places that we now cultivate; and this is one of the reasons, in addition to the undeniable international vocation of our terroir, why we chose to plant merlot, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, alicante bouschet, respecting the choices made by those before us who had taken care of this wonderful amphitheater .
We owe the beginning of our personal history entirely to grandfather Franco, Franco Lenzini, he was the one who managed to see further than the others, betting on the rebirth of a place left to total abandonment; carrying out the renovation, to the point of making it even more fascinating.
In fact, in this land it is easy to get lost in the breath of a time gone by; it's easy when the sun goes down to find yourself listening to a silence that has no age, but which instead has a great memory.
Today I, Benedetta, Franco's niece, are at the helm of the company.
Together with my husband Michele Guarino, every day we strive to create expressive wines, wines in which the impact of man becomes non-existent, and where nature takes shape and substance.
In fact, since 2007 the company has undergone a profound change with us: first the organic management, then the inevitable transition to the biodynamic philosophy.
Inevitable, because our interest in a living, vital land becomes inevitable, capable of bearing intense fruit, with great expressive capacity... and all without the aid of chemistry or
Our adventure began in 2007, and with it, the process of conversion to natural management.
Ours was an inevitable choice, the result of a profound process of change that began first of all in us with the birth of our first son Filippo.
Enough with chemical and synthetic substances, enough with sulfur of petroleum origin.
But it is after the encounter with biodynamic philosophy that everything changes... our point of view undergoes a substantial change... the focus is no longer the plant, but the soil where it lives, grows and feeds.
Here is the importance of working to stimulate the vitality of the soil, because the soil is the starting point... and therefore deep tillage in autumn, followed by the sowing of legumes, crucifers and grasses which will be mowed in spring.
And again, in autumn, we distribute the 500 prepared to give ego, personality to our soil, and to generate humus, life.
No fertilization.
In spring, however, we use 501, silica horn, to stimulate the photosynthesis of our plants. Limited use of copper and sulfur, and lots of respect.
The same respect we also use in the cellar, where fermentations are spontaneous, reducing the use of sulphites to a minimum, so as not to alter the fruit which is and must remain an expression of our territory: Gragnano. Aging in steel, concrete and old wood, so that our wine is easily readable.
here are many hands that help us preserve the beauty of our estate.
Young and quick hands, calloused and warm hands.
An ocean of fingers that touch our soles, taking care of them with the love of a father.
And there are faces, eyes, who experience Gragnano every day as if it were their home: these are the people we thank.
Pietro Moretti, Luca Nesi, Italo Lazzerini, Giacomo Santucci; three different generations who passionately believe in our "corner of Paradise"; because Gragnano is ours, it is theirs.
